Introduction:

As followers of Christ, we are called to be vigilant and discerning, especially when it comes to identifying and responding to spiritual threats within our midst. In the book of 2 Timothy, the apostle Paul warns Timothy about Alexander the coppersmith, highlighting the importance of being aware of those who pose a danger to the faith community.

We will explore why we should beware of individuals like Alexander, examining the characteristics and behaviors that warrant caution in our interactions with them.

May this message equip us to navigate the challenges of spiritual warfare with wisdom and discernment.

1: Someone who Causes Many Evils (2 Timothy 4:14a)

In 2 Timothy 4:14a, Paul warns Timothy about Alexander the coppersmith, describing him as someone who has caused him much harm. This serves as a reminder that there are individuals within the church who may seek to cause division, discord, and harm to the body of Christ. As believers, we must be alert to such individuals and guard against their influence.

2: Someone Whose Good Works Are Not Bad (2 Timothy 4:14b)

Interestingly, in 2 Timothy 4:14b, Paul acknowledges that Alexander had done him much harm, yet his evil deeds were not entirely bad. This suggests that outward appearances can be deceiving, and individuals like Alexander may disguise their true intentions behind a façade of good works or apparent righteousness. Therefore, we must exercise discernment and not be misled by outward appearances alone.

3: Someone Who Resists the Word of God (2 Timothy 4:15)

In 2 Timothy 4:15, Paul warns Timothy to beware of Alexander because he strongly opposed the message of the Gospel. This underscores the importance of recognizing individuals who resist or reject the Word of God, as they pose a significant threat to the integrity of the faith community. We must be cautious of those who promote false teachings or undermine the authority of Scripture.
