The Five Characteristics of the Christian Sensible
Opening Scripture:
"The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge." (Proverbs 18:15)
Introduction:
The word "prudent" comes from the Hebrew "aruwm," which can mean both shrewd and sensible. As Christians, we are called to exercise wisdom and sound judgment in all areas of life. Today, let us explore five characteristics of the sensible Christian and how they align with biblical teaching.

I. A Prudent Christian Always Seeks to Learn
A prudent believer understands the importance of gaining wisdom and knowledge. The Bible teaches:
"A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel." (Proverbs 1:5)
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7)
"A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart." (Proverbs 18:2)
"The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness." (Proverbs 15:14)
Let us commit ourselves to be students of God’s Word and seekers of wisdom.
II. A Prudent Christian Listens to and Receives Correction
Correction is a part of growth, and those who are wise accept it with humility.
"A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent." (Proverbs 15:5)
"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise." (Proverbs 12:15)
"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear." (Proverbs 25:11-12)
Receiving correction is not always easy, but it shapes us into mature and godly individuals.
III. A Prudent Christian Thinks Before Speaking
The power of words cannot be underestimated. Scripture warns us to be cautious with our speech:
"A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness." (Proverbs 12:23)
"A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back." (Proverbs 29:11)
"So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." (James 1:19)
"He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive." (Proverbs 17:27-28)
Let our words reflect wisdom and grace, bringing encouragement rather than harm.
IV. A Prudent Christian Thinks Before Acting
A wise believer does not act recklessly but carefully considers their steps.
"The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless." (Proverbs 14:15-16, ESV)
"Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool lays open his folly." (Proverbs 13:16)
Acting with discernment protects us from unnecessary trouble and aligns our actions with God's will.
V. A Prudent Christian Controls Their Temper
A hallmark of spiritual maturity is the ability to manage one's emotions, particularly anger.
"A fool’s wrath is known at once, but a prudent man covers shame." (Proverbs 12:16, NKJV)
"A fool’s anger is known at once, but a prudent man conceals dishonor." (Proverbs 12:16, NASU)
"The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult." (Proverbs 12:16, ESV)
Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and a sign of godly wisdom.
Conclusion:
As we strive to be sensible Christians, let us seek wisdom, accept correction, be mindful of our words, think before acting, and exercise self-control. May our lives reflect the character of Christ and glorify God in all we do. Amen.
