Should a Christian Drink Alcoholic Beverages?
Opening Scripture:
“Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6).
Introduction:
In today's world, the consumption of alcohol is widely accepted, even among some believers. However, as followers of Christ, we must ask ourselves: Does drinking align with God's will for us? Let us examine the biblical teachings on this matter.

I. Christians Are Commanded to Be Sober
The Bible repeatedly calls us to live soberly:
“That the older men be sober…” (Titus 2:2).
“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober…” (1 Peter 1:13).
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion…” (1 Peter 5:8).
The Greek word nepho means “to be free from the influence of intoxicants.” A sober mind is necessary to remain watchful and alert against the schemes of the enemy.
II. Alcohol Impairs Judgment and Lowers Inhibitions
The Bible warns about the dangers of alcohol:
“But they also have erred through wine, and through intoxicating drink are out of the way…” (Isaiah 28:7).
“They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end” (Psalm 107:27).
Examples from Scripture:
Noah (Genesis 9:20-21) – His drunkenness led to shame.
Lot (Genesis 19:32-35) – Alcohol impaired his judgment, leading to sinful consequences.
Even kings and priests were forbidden from drinking:
“It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes intoxicating drink; lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the justice of all the afflicted” (Proverbs 31:4-5).
“Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations” (Leviticus 10:9).
As Christians, we are called kings and priests in Christ:
“And has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (Revelation 1:6).
III. Alcohol is Addictive
Paul teaches that while some things may be lawful, not all things are beneficial:
“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything.” (1 Corinthians 6:12, ESV)
Alcohol has the power to enslave and destroy lives. As believers, we must be cautious not to become entangled in anything that could control us.
Additionally, drinking can cause others to stumble:
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!” (Matthew 18:6-7)
Conclusion:
God calls His people to be sober, wise, and set apart from the world. Alcohol impairs judgment, lowers inhibitions, and can lead to addiction. As kings and priests in Christ, let us live in a way that glorifies God and protects ourselves and others from stumbling.
May we choose the path of wisdom and holiness, seeking God’s best for our lives. Amen.
