Preaching on The Letter to the Church of Philadelphia Revelation 3:7-13

The Open Door: Lessons from Philadelphia's Faithful Endurance

The church at Philadelphia, a beacon of faithfulness amidst the trials of the world. This church, described in Revelation 3:7-13, stands as a testament to the power of unwavering devotion to Christ, even when faced with limited resources. Let us examine the message delivered to this faithful congregation, and learn how to emulate their steadfastness.

1. The Holy and True Lord (Revelation 3:7)

"These things says the Holy One, the True One, who has the key of David." Jesus presents Himself as the embodiment of holiness and truth. He possesses the key of David, signifying His royal authority and control over the doors of opportunity. We must recognize that only He can open and close doors that no one can alter.

2. The Door Opened by God (Revelation 3:8)

"Behold, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it." God opens doors for His church to fulfill His divine purpose. No human or spiritual force can thwart His will. We must discern and embrace the opportunities He sets before us, trusting in His sovereign power.

3. Small Strength, Great Faithfulness (Revelation 3:8)

"Though you have a little strength, you have kept my word and have not denied my name." The strength of the church does not lie in its size or resources, but in its obedience to God's Word. Even with limited strength, faithfulness to Christ is paramount. True spiritual success is measured by our unwavering adherence to His Word.

4. Triumph Over Adversaries (Revelation 3:9)

"Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan... to come and worship before thy feet." Those who persecute the faithful will ultimately acknowledge the truth of Christ's sovereignty. God exalts those who remain loyal to Him, and divine justice will prevail in due time.

5. Kept from the Hour of Trial (Revelation 3:10)

"Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation." God protects those who remain faithful through trials. Perseverance in faith brings divine deliverance. Faithfulness prepares us to endure the most challenging times.

6. The Promise of Christ's Return (Revelation 3:11)

"Behold, I come quickly." Jesus's return is certain and imminent. We must live in constant anticipation of His coming, maintaining vigilance and holiness to be found ready.

7. Holding on to What You Have (Revelation 3:11)

"Hold on to what you have, so that no one may take your crown." We must safeguard our faith and commitment to Christ. Perseverance guarantees our eternal reward. Satan seeks to steal our faithfulness and rob us of our crown.

8. Made Pillars in the Temple of God (Revelation 3:12)

"Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God; and he shall go no more out." The overcomers will be established as pillars in God's temple, signifying stability, security, and eternal communion with Christ. The faithful Christian will have an unshakable place in God’s presence.

9. A New Name in Christ (Revelation 3:12)

"And I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God." Our name symbolizes possession, identity, and belonging to God. Those who persevere will receive a new name, signifying their true identity in Christ.

10. Hear What the Spirit Says to the Churches (Revelation 3:13)

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." The Holy Spirit continues to speak to the church today. We must be attentive and obedient to His direction. Faithfulness to the voice of the Spirit leads us to victory.
