Preaching on Revelation: Unveiling the Victory

Unveiling the Victory: A Sermon on Revelation

Introduction:

The book of Revelation, often shrouded in mystery and fear, is a powerful message of hope and ultimate victory. Today, we will delve into its pages, seeking to understand its purpose, its relevance, and the enduring message it holds for us.

I. Why Study Revelation? The Divine Unveiling:

A. The Revelation is from Jesus Christ:

    • This is not a human composition, but a divine unveiling, a direct revelation from Jesus Christ Himself.

B. It is the Revelation of Jesus:

    • Revelation is not primarily about future events, but about the revelation of Jesus Christ in His glory, power, and final triumph.

C. It is Meant to Be Read and Understood:

    • Despite its symbolic language, Revelation is intended to be read, understood, and applied to our lives.

D. It Extends and Fulfills the Old Testament:

    • Revelation draws heavily on Old Testament imagery and prophecy, completing the grand narrative of God's redemptive plan.

II. Is Revelation a Prophecy of Today's Events? Understanding the Time Frame:

A. "Shortly Take Place" and "The Time is Near" (Revelation 1:1-3):

    • John emphasizes the immediacy of the revelation, using phrases like "shortly take place" and "the time is near."

B. John's Participation in Tribulation and Kingdom (Revelation 1:9):

    • John claims to be a partaker of the tribulation and the kingdom, placing the revelation within his own historical context.

C. Imminent Coming (Revelation 2:16, 3:11, 22:6, 7, 10, 12, 20):

    • Throughout Revelation, Jesus repeatedly states, "I am coming quickly," emphasizing the urgency of His message.

    • While these verses speak to the nearness of events to John and the early church, they also carry an enduring spiritual significance, reminding us of the constant expectation of Christ’s return.

D. Understanding the Symbolism:

    • It is crucial to understand that much of Revelation uses symbolic language. While some events may have parallels in our time, a literal, chronological interpretation can lead to misinterpretations.

III. What Is the Message? Revelation 13 and Beyond: The Enduring Truth

A. We Will Battle Enemies to the End:

    • Revelation 13 depicts the forces of evil arrayed against God's people. We are engaged in a spiritual battle that will continue until Christ's return.

B. It May Seem Like the Enemy Is Ahead:

    • The enemy may appear powerful and victorious, but this is a temporary illusion.

C. God Is Victorious...Don't Lose Heart:

    • Revelation is ultimately a message of hope and triumph. God's victory is assured. We must not lose heart in the face of adversity.

D. If We Are Faithful to the End...Jesus Will Give Us a Crown of Life:

    • Revelation repeatedly emphasizes the reward for faithfulness:

        ◦ Revelation 2:7: "To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.

        ◦ Revelation 3:5: "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels."

        ◦ Revelation 3:21: "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

E. The Overcoming Power of the Lamb (Revelation 12:10-12):

    • Revelation 12:10-12: "Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

    • We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, the word of our testimony, and a willingness to sacrifice for Christ.
