Samuel: A Life That Heard and Obeyed God
Text: 1 Samuel 3:1-7
Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 7:17
Introduction
Samuel was one of the greatest prophets and judges of Israel. He ministered during the days of Saul and David for approximately fifty years and established the School of the Prophets (1 Samuel 19:20). His name means “God Hears.”
Known as the last of the judges and the first of the prophets, Samuel was also called “The King Maker,” because he anointed both Saul and David as kings of Israel.
Samuel's story begins with the faithful prayers of his mother, Hannah. He was a child born as an answer to prayer and became a servant wholly dedicated to God.
His life teaches us how God can use a person who is consecrated, attentive to His voice, dependent upon Him, and faithful until the end.
I. Samuel Was Consecrated to God by His Parents
1 Samuel 1:24-28
Samuel was dedicated to the Lord before he could understand the significance of that dedication.
A. He was devoted to God's service
His parents desired that their son belong to God and serve Him faithfully (1 Samuel 1:24-28).
They preferred that he be used by God rather than by men.
B. He learned to love and serve God from childhood
Samuel ministered before the Lord while still a child (1 Samuel 1:28; 2:11).
He was called at a very young age into God's service (1 Samuel 3:10).
C. Hannah's influence upon Samuel
His mother played a crucial role in his spiritual development:
• She prayed for her son (1 Samuel 1:27).
• She provided for his needs (1 Samuel 2:18-19).
• She had the highest spiritual purposes for his life (1 Samuel 1:21-22).
D. God's work in Samuel's life
• God called him early into service (1 Samuel 3:10; 2 Chronicles 34:3).
• Samuel was dedicated to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:22).
• He served the Lord from his youth (1 Samuel 2:11).
• He was called by God (1 Samuel 3:4; Acts 13:2).
Application: God delights in using those who are dedicated to Him from an early age and who are willing to serve Him wholeheartedly.
II. Samuel Heard the Voice of God in His Childhood
1 Samuel 3:1-18
One of the most remarkable moments in Samuel's life occurred when he heard the voice of God while still a child.
A. God called Samuel personally
1 Samuel 3:1-9
One night, while Samuel was sleeping, the Lord called him.
At first, Samuel thought Eli was calling him. Eventually, Eli realized that God was speaking and instructed Samuel to listen.
B. Samuel responded with obedience
The young servant answered:
“Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10).
This became the attitude that characterized his entire life.
C. God entrusted him with a message
1 Samuel 3:10-14
The Lord revealed His judgment against Eli and his wicked sons.
God trusted Samuel with an important responsibility.
D. Samuel faithfully delivered God's message
1 Samuel 3:15-18
Although the message was difficult, Samuel obeyed and told Eli everything the Lord had spoken.
E. God confirmed His servant
1 Samuel 3:19-21
• God publicly recognized Samuel (1 Samuel 3:4, 6, 8).
• God revealed Himself to him (1 Samuel 3:11-14).
• God confirmed him as His servant (1 Samuel 3:19-21).
• Samuel was richly blessed (1 Samuel 3:19).
• Samuel was honored by the Lord (1 Samuel 3:21).
Application: God speaks to those who are willing to listen, and He blesses those who obey His voice.
III. As an Adult, Samuel Allowed Prayer and Dependence on God to Guide Him
1 Samuel 7:1-8
Samuel's strength came from his fellowship with God.
His communion with the Lord inspired confidence and credibility among the people.
A. Samuel led Israel to repentance
1 Samuel 7:1-6
After twenty years of spiritual decline, Samuel called the nation to repentance.
The people destroyed their idols and worshiped the Lord alone.
Samuel became judge over Israel.
B. God fought for His people
1 Samuel 7:7-11
When the Philistines attacked, Samuel sought the Lord.
The mighty voice of God thundered from heaven, confusing the Philistines and giving Israel victory.
C. Samuel established Ebenezer
1 Samuel 7:12
Samuel set up a stone of remembrance and called it Ebenezer, meaning:
“Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.”
This monument reminded Israel that every victory came from God.
D. Samuel faithfully served the nation
For many years he traveled throughout Israel, judging and leading God's people.
Application: A life of prayer and dependence upon God becomes a channel through which God brings revival, victory, and hope.
IV. In His Old Age, Samuel Became One of the Most Respected Men in Israel
1 Samuel 12:1-5
Samuel finished his life with honor and integrity.
A. He maintained a blameless testimony
Before the nation, Samuel challenged anyone to accuse him of wrongdoing (1 Samuel 12:1-5).
His life matched his message.
B. He anointed Israel's kings
• He anointed Saul as king.
• He anointed David as king (1 Samuel 16-17).
Because of this ministry, he became known as the king maker.
C. He established the School of the Prophets
Samuel helped institutionalize prophetic training in Israel (1 Samuel 19:20).
His influence extended far beyond his own lifetime.
D. He earned the respect of an entire nation
When Samuel died, all Israel mourned for him.
His faithful service left a lasting legacy.
Application: The greatest testimony is not how a person begins but how faithfully he finishes.
Conclusion
Samuel's life reveals four characteristics of a servant greatly used by God:
1. He was consecrated to God (1 Samuel 1:24-28).
2. He heard and obeyed God's voice (1 Samuel 3:1-18).
3. He depended upon prayer and God's guidance (1 Samuel 7:1-12).
4. He finished with honor and influence (1 Samuel 12:1-5).
Like Samuel, may we be able to say throughout our lives:
“Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10).
And may we never forget the testimony of Ebenezer:
“Hitherto hath the Lord helped us” (1 Samuel 7:12).
Samuel's life is a testament to the power of dedication, obedience, and faithfulness. He was a man who listened to God, spoke God’s truth, and served God’s people with integrity. Let us learn from Samuel’s example, striving to live lives of unwavering devotion to God. May we be like Samuel, beacons of righteousness in a world that desperately needs God’s light. Amen.
