Sermon on Hannah’s Prayer
Brothers and sisters, let us turn our attention to the poignant and powerful story of Hannah, a woman whose heart poured out to God in prayer. Her story, found in 1 Samuel, is a testament to the power of persistent prayer and the faithfulness of God.
1. Hannah’s Suffering and Her Search for God (1 Samuel 1:10)
"In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly." 1 Samuel 1:10 reveals Hannah's profound suffering. Barrenness in that time was a source of deep shame and sorrow. Hannah's suffering drove her not to despair, but to God. She sought Him in her anguish, demonstrating that even in our deepest pain, God is our refuge.
2. Hannah’s Prayer Was a Personal and Intense Prayer (1 Samuel 1:11)
"And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”" 1 Samuel 1:11 reveals the personal and intense nature of Hannah's prayer. She poured out her heart to God, making a specific vow. Her prayer was not a casual request, but a desperate plea from a broken heart.
3. Hannah Expresses Her Anguish and Trust in God (1 Samuel 1:11)
Hannah's prayer was a raw expression of her anguish, but it was also an act of profound trust. She recognized God as Lord Almighty, acknowledging His power and sovereignty. She trusted that He could see her misery and remember her.
4. Hannah’s Prayer as an Act of Faith (1 Samuel 1:11)
Hannah's vow to give her son back to the Lord was an act of extraordinary faith. She was willing to surrender the very thing she longed for most. This demonstrates that true faith is not about getting what we want, but about surrendering to God's will.
5. God’s Silence and Hannah’s Perseverance in Prayer (1 Samuel 1:13)
"Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk." 1 Samuel 1:13 reveals the reality of unanswered prayer. Hannah's lips moved, but no sound came out. Yet, she persevered. She did not give up, but continued to pour out her heart to God.
6. Eli the Priest’s Reaction and Hannah’s Response (1 Samuel 1:14)
Eli, the priest, misjudged Hannah, thinking she was drunk. This highlights the importance of not judging others based on appearances. Hannah's response was one of humility and honesty. She explained her situation and corrected Eli’s misjudgment.
7. Hannah’s Prayer as an Example of Integrity and Honesty (1 Samuel 1:15)
"“Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.”" 1 Samuel 1:15 demonstrates Hannah's integrity and honesty. She did not become defensive or angry, but she spoke the truth. Her prayer was a genuine outpouring of her soul.
8. God’s Response to Hannah’s Prayer (1 Samuel 1:17)
"Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may God grant you what you have asked of him.”" 1 Samuel 1:17 shows that God heard Hannah's prayer. Through Eli, He offered her assurance. God sees our tears and hears our cries.
9. Hannah’s Gratitude and the Fulfillment of His Promise (1 Samuel 1:20)
"So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”" 1 Samuel 1:20 reveals God's faithfulness. He answered Hannah's prayer and fulfilled His promise. Hannah, in turn, remembered her vow and gave her son back to the Lord.
10. Hannah’s Prayer as a Testimony of Faithfulness and Gratitude (1 Samuel 1:21-22)
"When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, Hannah did not go." 1 Samuel 1:21-22 displays Hannah's faithfulness. She waited until Samuel was weaned and then fulfilled her vow, bringing him to the temple. Her life became a testimony of gratitude and submission to God's plan.
