What Will You Do for the Gospel? A Call to Action

What Will You Do for the Gospel? A Call to Action

A profound question: What will you do for the Gospel? This question is not merely rhetorical; it is a call to action, a challenge to examine our hearts and determine how we will participate in the glorious work of spreading the good news. We are reminded of the countless individuals who have given so much for the Gospel, from the generosity of Barnabas to the passionate sacrifice of Paul, and ultimately, the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us explore the scriptures, particularly Psalm 119:9-16, and consider how we can actively engage in God’s redemptive plan.

Many Have Given Much for the Gospel: A Legacy of Sacrifice

We are reminded of the selfless acts of those who came before us. Barnabas, in Acts 4:36-37, sold his land and brought the proceeds to the apostles, demonstrating a heart of generosity. Paul, in Philippians 3:8-9, counted everything as loss for the sake of Christ, showcasing his unwavering devotion. And above all, Jesus, in His infinite love, gave His life as a ransom for many. These examples remind us that the Gospel is worth our utmost devotion and sacrifice.

USE IT TO CLEANSE MY WAYS: Living a Transformed Life

Psalm 119:9 asks, “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” We must use the Gospel to cleanse our ways, transforming our thoughts, words, and behaviors.

    • My Thoughts (Philippians 4:7-9): The Gospel guards our hearts and minds, filling them with truth, honor, and purity.

    • My Mouth (James 1:26): The Gospel teaches us to control our tongues, speaking words of life and edification.

    • My Behaviors (Psalm 119:9): The Gospel guides us in righteous living, shaping our actions to reflect the character of Christ.

USE IT TO ENRICH MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD: Seeking Intimacy

Psalm 119:10 proclaims, “I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.” Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” We must use the Gospel to enrich our relationship with God, seeking Him with all our hearts and cultivating a deep, abiding faith.

PROCLAIM IT TO THE WORLD: Sharing the Good News

Matthew 28:19-20 commands, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 1 Corinthians 9:16 declares, “For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” James 5:20 adds, "remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their ways saves them from death and covers over a multitude of sins." We are called to proclaim the Gospel to the world, sharing the message of salvation with boldness and urgency.

DESIRE IT MORE THAN MATERIAL GAIN: Valuing Eternal Treasure

Psalm 119:14 states, “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.” We must desire the Gospel more than material gain, valuing eternal treasure above earthly possessions.

    • Worship or Work: Are we prioritizing our relationship with God over our careers and worldly pursuits?

    • Give or Hoard: Are we generously sharing our resources, or are we clinging to them selfishly?

RESPECT IT FOR WHAT IT SAYS: Submitting to Divine Authority

Psalm 119:15 urges, “I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.” We must respect the Gospel for what it says, submitting to God’s divine authority and trusting in His perfect wisdom. We must not question God's divine authority, but humbly follow it.

MAKE IT MY PASTIME: Cultivating Constant Communion

Psalm 119:16 declares, “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” We must make the Gospel our pastime, cultivating constant communion with God through His Word. Is Sunday and Wednesday study enough? Or are we immersing ourselves in the scriptures daily, allowing them to shape our lives?

What Will You Do for the Gospel? A Call to Action

Conclusion

The Gospel is not a passive message; it is a call to action. Let us examine our hearts, commit to living transformed lives, and actively participate in spreading the good news. May we, like those who came before us, give our all for the sake of the Gospel. Amen.
