Preaching on Covenant with God: A Committed People

Covenant with God: A Committed People

The profound concept of a covenant with God, a sacred agreement that demands a committed people, a people dedicated to His Word and His ways. Today, we explore the depth of this covenant, examining its requirements, its blessings, and its transformative power.

1. The Covenant as a Commitment to the Word of God (Exodus 24:7)

And he took the book of the covenant, and read it in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do, and be obedient.” At Mount Sinai, the people of Israel pledged their obedience to God’s Word. This covenant was founded on submission to divine authority. A true covenant with God requires us to place His Word above our own desires.

2. The Conscious Choice to Serve God (Joshua 24:24)

And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.” The covenant with God is not a passive agreement; it demands a conscious and deliberate choice to serve Him. This commitment must be renewed in each generation, a personal and unwavering decision to follow His voice.

3. Renewing the Covenant in Times of Spiritual Restoration (2 Kings 11:17)

And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, who should be the Lord’s people, and between the king and the people.” In times of spiritual decline, the covenant must be renewed. Jehoiada’s actions during the restoration of David’s throne demonstrate the importance of returning to God’s ways. When we stray from the path, we must repent and recommit ourselves to His covenant.

4. The Covenant as a Return to Faithfulness (2 Kings 23:3)

The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments, his testimonies, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people confirmed the covenant.” King Josiah’s leadership brought about a national revival, a return to faithfulness. A genuine covenant involves a wholehearted commitment to God’s commands, a dedication of both heart and soul.

5. The Covenant as a Source of Blessings and Prosperity (2 Chronicles 15:12)

And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul.” God promises blessings to those who seek Him sincerely, to those who enter into covenant with Him. True spiritual prosperity flows from a total commitment to God, from aligning our lives with His will.

6. The Example of Commitment of Spiritual Leaders (2 Chronicles 23:16)

And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people, and between the king, that they should be the Lord’s people.” Spiritual leaders play a vital role in guiding God’s people back to covenant faithfulness. When leaders align themselves with God, they bless the entire community. We must pray that our leaders lead us to renew our covenant with God.

7. The Importance of a Public Commitment to God (Nehemiah 10:29)

They clung firmly to their brothers, the most noble among them, and entered into a curse and an oath to walk in the law of God given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, his laws and his statutes.” The people of Nehemiah’s time made a public commitment to obedience, a visible declaration of their covenant with God. Our covenant with God should be evident in our actions, our words, and our testimony.
