Creating Supportive Relationships Among Women in the Church
Sisters in Christ, today we focus on the vital importance of fostering supportive and nurturing relationships among women within the church. God, in His wisdom, has designed us for connection and mutual encouragement. As we explore the scriptures, we discover the beauty and strength that arise when women in faith walk alongside one another.

1. God created fellowship for mutual support (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls, the other will lift up his companion; but woe to him who is alone, for if he falls, there is no one to lift him up." This wisdom from Ecclesiastes speaks to the inherent value of companionship and mutual aid. God designed us to support one another, offering strength and encouragement in times of need. This principle is beautifully applicable to the bonds between women in the church.
2. Older women are called to teach and support younger women (Titus 2:3-5)
"Older women, likewise, must be reverent in their behavior, as becomes saints, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things, so that they may teach the young women to be self-controlled, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be blasphemed." Paul's instruction to Titus highlights the crucial role of older women in mentoring and supporting younger women. Their experience and wisdom are invaluable in guiding the next generation in godly living, fostering a cycle of support and discipleship.
3. Unity in Christ promotes support and equality (Galatians 3:28)
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." In Christ, the barriers that often divide us are broken down. We are united as one, and this unity fosters an environment of mutual support and equality among sisters in faith. Our shared identity in Christ transcends societal roles and empowers us to uplift one another.
4. We must bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2)
"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." This command is a cornerstone of Christian community. As women in the church, we are called to share in each other's joys and sorrows, offering practical and emotional support in times of difficulty. By carrying each other's burdens, we exemplify the love of Christ.
5. Brotherly love strengthens bonds between sisters in faith (Romans 12:10)
"Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love; in honor giving preference to one another." While the term "brotherly love" is used, the principle extends beautifully to the affectionate and honoring relationships between sisters in Christ. We are called to treat one another with kindness, respect, and a genuine desire to see each other flourish.
6. Prayer in unity is a pillar of spiritual support (James 5:16)
"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." 1 The power of united prayer cannot be overstated. When women in the church come together to confess, pray, and intercede for one another, they create a powerful network of spiritual support and healing.
7. Godly women are instruments of edification in the body of Christ (Proverbs 31:26)
"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the law of kindness is on her tongue." The virtuous woman described in Proverbs speaks with wisdom and kindness, using her words to build up and encourage those around her. Godly women in the church have the power to edify and strengthen their sisters through their words and actions.
8. The early church already demonstrated mutual support among women (Acts 16:13-15)
"And on the sabbath day we went out of the city by the river side, where we supposed there was prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered together." The account of Lydia and the women gathered by the river illustrates the early church's pattern of women coming together for prayer and fellowship. Lydia's hospitality and support for Paul's ministry further exemplify this spirit of mutual encouragement.
9. Women can serve together for eternal purposes (Philippians 4:2-3)
"I beg Euodia and I beg Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I beseech thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with the rest of my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life." Paul's plea for unity between Euodia and Syntyche, and his acknowledgment of women who labored alongside him in the Gospel, underscores the importance of women serving together in harmony for eternal purposes.
10. True support comes from obedience to Christ (John 13:34-35)
"A new commandment I give to you: Love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Ultimately, the foundation of supportive relationships among women in the church, and indeed among all believers, is obedience to Christ's command to love one another as He has loved us. This selfless, sacrificial love is the wellspring of true support and unity.

Therefore, sisters in Christ, let us intentionally cultivate supportive relationships within our churches. Let us embrace the wisdom of fellowship, the guidance of older women, the unity we share in Christ, the call to bear one another's burdens, the affection of sisterly love, the power of united prayer, the edifying influence of godly speech, the example of the early church, the joy of serving together, and above all, the commandment to love one another as Christ has loved us. May our bonds strengthen us, encourage us, and reflect the love of Christ to the world around us. Amen.
