Sermon About Patience: Wait in God

Sermon About Patience Put Wait in Your Gait Acts 1

In the Bible, patience is often referred to as a virtue and a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Patience is defined as the ability to remain calm and composed while waiting for something or dealing with difficult situations.

One of the most well-known verses about patience in the Bible is found in James 1:2-4, which says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

This passage highlights the importance of patience in enduring difficult circumstances and allowing perseverance to strengthen one's faith. Other verses in the Bible also emphasize the importance of patience in relationships, in waiting on the Lord, and in pursuing righteousness.

Among these challanges are:

  • A world of rigorous toil-Matt. 25:34-40; Mk. 16:15; I Cor. 15:58
  • Many grueling battles-I Tim. 6:12; 2 Tim. 2:3-4
  • Temptations to overcome-Jas. 1:12; I Pet. 2:11
  • Last, but not least, persecution from without as well as within-2 Tim. 3:12; I Pet. 4:12

I. Patience with Ourselves (1 Peter 2:1-3)

We begin by recognizing the importance of patience with ourselves. In 1 Peter 2:1-3, we are encouraged to rid ourselves of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. Spiritual growth is a process, and we must exercise patience as God works within us to transform our hearts and minds.

Embrace self-compassion and allow God's grace to work in your life.
Understand that spiritual growth takes time, and setbacks are part of the journey.

II. Patience in Marriage (1 Peter 3:7, Ephesians 5:22-33, Ephesians 4:32)

Patience plays a pivotal role in maintaining healthy and loving marriages. In 1 Peter 3:7, husbands are encouraged to live with their wives in an understanding way, showing honor and patience. Ephesians 5:22-33 highlights the sacrificial love and patience required of both spouses. Forgiveness and patience, as mentioned in Ephesians 4:32, are vital for marital harmony.

Practice empathy and understanding in your marriage. Foster an atmosphere of patience, forgiveness, and love.

III. Patience in Soul Winning (1 Peter 3:1-4, 2 Peter 2:5, 2 Timothy 4:2)

Our journey of faith often includes sharing the gospel with others. 1 Peter 3:1-4 underscores the importance of a gentle and quiet spirit in winning souls. Patience is key in reaching those who have yet to accept Christ. 2 Peter 2:5 and 2 Timothy 4:2 emphasize the persistence required in evangelism.

Approach evangelism with love, compassion, and a patient spirit. Remember that God's timing is perfect in touching the hearts of others.

IV. Patience Regarding the Coming of the Lord (Acts 1:11, 2 Peter 3:4, 9)

As Christians, we eagerly await the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 1:11 reminds us that Jesus will return just as He ascended. In 2 Peter 3:4 and 9, we learn that some may question His return, but God's patience is our salvation.

Maintain faith and hope in Christ's promised return. Continue to live in a way that reflects your anticipation of His coming.

V. Patience in Church Growth (Ephesians 3:21, 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, 2 Corinthians 4:2)

Lastly, patience is essential in the growth of our churches. Ephesians 3:21 speaks of God's work within the church, and 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 reminds us that God causes the growth. Patience is required as we labor in God's vineyard, understanding that the results are ultimately in His hands.

Serve faithfully in your church, trusting in God's timing and provision. Remain focused on God's mission and His purpose for the church.

VI. Wait Patiently on the Lord Psalm 40

Psalm 40 is a powerful reminder of the benefits of waiting patiently on the Lord. Here are some steps you can take to cultivate patience and trust in God's timing as you wait on Him:

    1. Cry out to the Lord: In verse 1, the psalmist writes, "I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry." It's important to acknowledge your need for God's help and to ask Him to intervene in your situation. Spend time in prayer, pouring out your heart to Him and seeking His guidance and comfort.

    2. Trust in God's faithfulness: The psalmist goes on to say, "He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand" (v. 2). Remembering God's faithfulness in the past can give us hope and confidence in His ability to help us in the present.

    3. Wait expectantly: Verse 3 says, "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him." As you wait on the Lord, trust that He will act on your behalf and bring about good in your life. Expect to see His faithfulness and be ready to give Him praise and glory when He does.

    4. Keep your focus on God: It can be easy to become discouraged or distracted while waiting on the Lord, but the psalmist encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on Him. He writes, "Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods" (v. 4). Resist the temptation to turn to worldly sources of comfort or distraction and instead keep your gaze on God.

    5. Surrender your will to God's: The psalmist concludes by saying, "I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart" (v. 8). Ultimately, waiting patiently on the Lord requires a willingness to surrender our own desires and plans to His will. Trust that He knows what is best for you and that His timing is perfect, even if it doesn't always align with our own expectations

VII. While you wait, pray (Acts 1:12-26).

The believers gathered to pray (1:12-14).

Peter followed God’s leading to replace Judas with Matthias (1:15-26).

Praying and waiting on God is a powerful practice that can bring great peace, guidance, and strength to our lives. When we pray, we are communicating with our Creator, expressing our deepest desires and concerns, and seeking His wisdom and provision. Waiting on God involves trusting in His perfect timing and allowing Him to work in our lives in His own way and according to His own plan.

One of the most important aspects of praying and waiting on God is cultivating a posture of humility and surrender. When we come to God in prayer, we acknowledge that we are not in control and that we need His help and guidance. We lay our hopes, fears, and dreams at His feet, trusting that He knows what is best for us and that He will work all things together for our good.

VIII. How can you wait expectantly in the Spirit?

Waiting on God requires patience, trust, and faith. It can be difficult to wait for God's answers or to see His plans unfold, especially when we are dealing with difficult circumstances or facing uncertainty. However, as we wait on God, we can find hope and strength in His promises and in the knowledge that He is always with us, even in the midst of our struggles.

This may involve stepping out in faith, taking risks, or making difficult decisions. However, when we trust in God and follow His leading, we can be confident that He will guide us along the right path and provide for all our needs.

It involves trusting in God's goodness, surrendering our will to His, and seeking His guidance and provision in all things. As we wait on God, we can find hope, strength, and peace in His promises and in the knowledge that He is always with us, leading us along the right path and fulfilling His plans for our lives.
